Tetras originate from river basins in Africa, Central America, and South America, and get their name from the Greek word “tetra,” which means “four” – this is in reference to their four unpaired fins (caudal fin, dorsal fin, anal fin, and adipose fin).

They are probably one of the most common fish you will see in a fish tank these days and I think it’s mostly due to their small size and marvelous appearances. With an average size of only 1-3 inches, you can really get away with keeping them in an aquarium as small as 10 gallons, so they aren’t really a hassle at all. And if you’re going for a community-style tank, they have a peaceful temperament and are relatively easy to keep.

If you do the counting, there are over 150 different types of tetra fish out there, so it can be quite the challenge to narrow it down to the exact one you want to adopt. Luckily, that’s exactly why we have designed this page. As you will see, listed below are 25 of our favorite types of tetra fish. Just select a name from the list below to reveal a picture of it, some information on it, and a link leading you to where you can find even more information about that specific species. We really hope you enjoy reading this page, and that in doing so, you get one step closer to adopting your new lucky friend.
